CHARACTER INFO.
✖ Character Name: Suzunomia
✖ Canon: Ar Tonelico; shortly after Suzunomia regains her memories and introduces herself as a Will of the Planet (level 8 of Finnel's Cosmosphere, before player locks into Finnel's route)
✖ Character Appearance: Here
✖ Character Age: Physically 17/18, is actually millions of years old
✖ Pick A Number: 66 & 582
✖ Canon Setting:
The Ar Tonelico series takes place on a planet called Ar Ciel. Ar Ciel orbits a star called Sol and has two moons, Viola and Cello. At the current time, it is uninhabitable due in part to poisonous clouds covering all of the world, called the Sea of Death. The land itself is no longer fertile and is made up mostly of active volcanoes, and the oceans cannot maintain aquatic life. Living things can only exist in the three Towers of Ar Tonelico, mountain tops, or on floating islands that are far enough above the Sea of Death. The sky has been split into the upper and lower realm due to a layer of plasma, called the Blastline, which destroys most air-crafts that try to pass through it. The most common way to move between the upper and lower realms is to climb the Towers. Each Tower is separated far enough from each other that their inhabitants consider them different worlds, each containing their own unique cultures and technology.
Ar Ciel is sentient and is maintained by a Consensus, with its Wills and the Divine Will (the founder of the planet), Ciela, residing in the planetary core. Ciela is made up of the three founder Wills of the planet: Horus, Juklizda, Clyuue. (The founders of Land, Sky, and Souls). Other Wills, like Suzunomia, that make up the Consensus, maintain different aspects of the world but can also visit the mortal realm by possessing a physical body.
The Blastline was created in the aftermath of the Grathnode Inferia, a disaster equivalent to numerous nuclear explosions, enough to cover the entire world. The Heart of the world was destroyed in the process, although the planet survived on what little energy it had left, thanks to Suzunomia's work of creating symphonic energy. However, the Consensus was greatly angered by the humans' destruction and thus created a new Will: Ar Ru, the creator and controller of the planet's Antibodies. Antibodies were created in order to return life energy to the planet by killing humans to steal their life energy and taking energy from the Blastline. While Ar Ru and Suzunomia tried gathering enough energy for Ar Ciel to survive, the 3rd Tower's facility, Moocheriel, began to steal symphonic energy from the planet, rendering Suzunomia's efforts fruitless. All the symphonic energy she produced was immediately sapped away, so the Consensus labeled her as a useless Will and banished her to the abyss. Thus, Ar Ciel abandoned its Will to Sing and created the Sea of Death to remove all lifeforms from its surface.
The problem is that the Antibodies' efforts would not be enough, and Ar Ciel would eventually need a new Heart in order to survive. What complicates things further is that a new Heart can only be created by mankind, and unless Ar Ciel's feelings can be changed, the Consensus would rather destroy all life in order to begin once more rather than accept the Heart.
Despite its efforts, life still resides in the Towers. Many different creatures exist in Ar Ciel, ranging from Earth animals like chickens and cats to more fantasy-based beasts like dragons, giant hawks with multiple wings, and ghost wolves. There are different races too: Humans, Teru, and Reyvateils. The Teru race are people who are half-dragon, are more nature-inclined compared to humans, and can live up to 200 years. Reyvateils are beings who can produce Song Magic. All Reyvateils are female, and its population is made up of purebloods and halfbloods. Purebloods include the Reyvateil Origins, the creators and administrators of the Towers, and β-types who are clones of the Origins, all of which are artificial lifeforms made up of organic matter. Halfbloods are therefore the children of humans and β-types.
Since Suzunomia is a Will of the Planet and produces symphonic energy, she does not rely on the Towers or the Song Servers. However, the Reyvateils rely heavily on the Towers because of their artificial souls are stored in the SH Server. If a β-type Reyvateil were to leave the SH Server's area, they would die from their Triangular Nuclear Loop, which acts as a heart and battery, would shut down. If this were to happen to Suzunomia's vessel, the physical body would revert to plasma, but her soul will survive. The Song Servers are also very important to Reyvateils because it is their source of symphonic power which is needed for Song Magic to materialize.
A little more about Song Magic: the biggest science theories of the Ar Tonelico games are the Wave Theory and the Hymmnos Theory.
Energy in the game's universe is referred to as Dynamic or Static waves. Static waves is continuous existence of a form whereas all Dynamic waves would be considered energy of motion, like light and heat waves. There are also two different types of waves called D-Waves and H-Waves, both of which exist on different dimensions.
D-Waves would be considered Matter Waves, although it would be Static D-Waves that would be considered matter whereas Dynamic D-waves would be energy. As long as something has a physical phenomenon, such as a physical object or is shapeless like fire or wind, it would be considered to have a certain frequency in order to exist. H-Waves are related to Feelings. More specifically, the Static H-Waves would be considered Souls and Dynamic H-waves would be active feelings.
It is important to note that Dynamic D-Waves are considered symphonic energy, which is used to perform Song Magic and is what Suzunomia's existence produces.
Hymmnos Theory focuses specifically on the conversion of symphonic energy through the use of Hymmnos Word or Hymmnos spells. Hymmnos Word is Song Magic which is only available to Reyvateils, and Hymmnos spells can be used by anyone to access smaller functions of the Tower, such as opening doors or downloading a Tower execution song into a Reyvateil. Since Suzunomia produces her own symphonic energy and does not need to rely on the Tower, she can use Song Magic freely in any type of vessel.
Suzunomia is also able to use the Ar Ciela language, which is predecessor of Hymmnos. However, because the language specifically belongs to the Wills, it mortals cannot comprehend it fully since its frequencies transcend audible range. ( 20~20000Hz vs 20~600000Hz.) Any Songs in Ar Ciela that go above audible frequencies will sound like static.
✖ Character History: http://artonelico.wikia.com/wiki/Suzunomia
✖ Character Personality:
When we first meet Suzunomia, she has been robbed of her identity, having lost it in the abyss. It has been 600 years since the Consensus has thrown her away. The only thing that remains intact are pieces of memories about her mission: to regain her power and the melody of the song that created the Tower-- the song that stole everything from her. In desperation to escape the void, she infiltrated Finnel's soulspace at her birth, and is seen as an enigmatic threat to the party for after taking control of Finnel's body. Suzunomia rejoices with her return to the mortal realm but quickly flees after the party demands that she return control to Finnel. The last thing she wants to do is give up her new-found freedom. She temporarily hands over control when Finnel begs her for help, but Suzunomia becomes enraged when Finnel attempts to trick her by asking the Archia Think Tank to destroy her. Without her identity, Suzunomia is completely unsympathetic towards anyone who tries to get in the way of her mission since it is the only thing she has. Anytime she helps the party, it is part of a deal to get her closer to restoring her powers, and hopefully, remembering who she is supposed to be.
However, by nature, Suzunomia is not a cruel person. When questioned about her potential identity as Ar Ru, the Will responsible for killing off humans, Suzunomia knows that she does not aim to hurt others nor has done so in the past. All of her attacks on other people are meant to disable them long enough for her to continue on her way. The only person she does harmful damage to is Finnel, and Suzunomia is quick to regret hurting her once she regains her memories.
Suzunomia's true personality appears once she regains her identity as a Will of the Planet. With Moocheriel shut down, the Consensus begins to slowly accept her again, and she returns control to Finnel once she is able to explain her actions and her story. The party then happily welcomes her into their group, and she is surprised by being claimed as a friend so quickly. Before disappearing, Suzunomia smiles for the first time: "Friend...sounds like a long forsaken word to my ears."
The majority of interaction with Suzunomia occurs in Finnel's Cosmosphere. In level 8, Suzunomia can be found at the Holt of Life, the only place in Finnel's soulspace that seems to be vibrant with life, thanks to Suzunomia's spiritual energy. Despite regaining her memories, Suzunomia cannot be happy because she remembers the toll she took on Finnel's soul while trying to shut down Moocheriel. She sees her previous actions as atrocious and offers her full support to Aoto to repent. It is a guilt that continuously haunts her throughout the rest of the game. During Finnel's route, she tries to make up for her actions by fusing with Finnel to provide her spiritual energy and changing the soulspace so that it can be a paradise for her.
Suzunomia's lack of patience towards people who have crossed her still remains. Meeting Ayatane in Finnel's Cosmosphere, the man who had tricked her into summoning Ar Ru into the mortal realm, Suzunomia begins to yell at him for lying to her and that him using her was unforgivable. Finnel and Aoto are the only ones to hold her back from attempting to destroy him when Ayatane insults her. Being toyed with, especially in her previous state, is something that Suzunomia cannot forgive. She is not meant to be a pawn.
On average, Suzunomia appears to be formal, relaxed, and speaks in a dignified and archaic manner. In comparison to the other Wills available to the party, she is by far the most antiquated. However, despite being a mature-looking individual, she is curious and can become overly excited. She interjects frequently in character responses in the Toukousphere when she's excited about a topic. (Toukousphere is a Q&A article that answers fans' question ICly.) Suzunomia also seems to admire extremely strong characters. In the Toukousphere, she sees Garzbern, a Teru, as very cool and eagerly requests for him to turn into his dragon form.
As for Suzunomia's quirks, she has a good number of them. The biggest one would be that she does not like to be called a child or looked down upon because of her small size. Whenever her capabilities come into question, she immediately asserts that she's much more powerful than she appears to be. Suzu is the kind of person to be offended if anyone accidentally called her a child. Despite her size complex, she does use her figure as a topic to tease Aoto during song synthesis. At the 4th level, when she is in her underwear, she jokes that Aoto has a weird obsession for flat-chested women for making her strip that far. When it comes to her feelings, it is likely for Suzunomia to begin teasing. During one talk topic, she gives Aoto a tough time for talking about Finnel when they're having time together. She casually berates him for mentioning another woman around her and comments that she is also his mistress...only to pull a 'just kidding'. While she's fond of Aoto, Suzunomia follows up with making him promise to cherish Finnel more than anyone and is pleased when he agrees.
Suzunomia loves love. When Finnel's Cosmosphere is rebuilt into a paradise, Suzunomia's gift to Aoto and Finnel is a cathedral where she can perform their marriage ceremony under the excuse of summoning a special Hyuma. Aoto and Finnel are too embarrassed to say 'I love you', instead using 'I like you', Suzunomia is unsatisfied with their vows despite the Hyuma appearing: "Ugh. I suppose this counts as a success since the Hyuma did appear. I thought it would make a nice memory for the young couple, but those were the weakest admissions of love ever." Nevertheless, she agrees with the couple that at least they're happy and that's what matters the most.
Also, since Suzunomia is a Will meant to create, it's obvious that she would be a vegetarian. In the game, her profile states that when she's nervous, she nibbles on veggies. Her favorite foods include acorns, mushrooms, kururuku punch, and gergo energy bars. When receiving them as presents, she prefers to share them with the other person. Another small quirk of hers is that she doesn't like a lot of questions thrown at her at once. If that happens, she'll order the person to ask them one at a time. As for preferences, she becomes uncomfortable in urban settings, favoring rural areas the most.
At the core of Suzunomia's identity, her love for Mother, Ar Ciel, surpasses all. Even with her amnesia, the basics of her duty to provide the planet with life energy remained. She dedicates her songs to Mother in battle, hoping to be able to communicate with the planet's Consensus again. She is a Will that is caring, especially towards the people she deems important in her life, and is sympathetic to the humans' wishes of co-residing with the planet, even though they hurt Ar Ciel so many times in the past.
✖ Character Powers:
Song Magic
Song magic, like its name suggests, is magic performed through singing. By using it, Suzunomia converts her feelings into energy that manifests as both attack and support magic. A magic circle will appear when Suzunomia sings, but her magic will be interrupted if an enemy steps into the circle or attacks her from a distance. Song magic can manifest as either Suzunomia's Mind Guardian, Aretia, or as orbs of light which is essentially her feelings in the form of condensed energy.
All Reyvateils can create bursts of energy on the spot to force others away from them, but they do not seem to cause damage, other than act as a nonlethal flash grenade for quick escapes. Because of Suzunomia's higher level of power, hers can potentially knock out people. Her capabilities are demonstrated in Finnel's route when she allows Finnel to borrow her power to break Akane out of the Archia Think Tank. Finnel is able to knock out four guards in one shot and is seen as a very dangerous threat by the Think Tank's leader. When Suzunomia takes over again, she knocks out Aoto long enough for her to head to Moocheriel without being followed. The party heads to Moocheriel once he wakes, and they automatically know Suzunomia has made it to the facility because of the group of unconscious guards at the entrance. Against the average Joe, Suzunomia can easily best them in a second.
Another common feature among Reyvateils during their performance of Song Magic is that background choruses and instrumentals can be heard while the Reyvateil is singing normally. To perform Hymmnos Word, sound is not needed to be produced by the mouth, although Reyvateils sing normally to make the Song Magic more powerful. As long as Song Magic can be understood and has strong feelings attached to it, a Reyvateil can perform without actually singing as long as she can concentrate on the song.
Purging
...Her clothes begin to disappear bit by bit and her magic becomes stronger. I'm not even kidding.
With each Purge (there's 3 levels and 4th activates Flipsphere), Suzunomia will be able to help her teammates by giving them elemental resistance as well as adding similar elemental magic damage to their attacks. By comparison, song magic initiated at the first level Purge with a longer time-lapse would be weaker than song magic initiated after 3 Purges with a shorter time-lapse.
Since Purging does require stripping, it is more like for Suzunomia to Purge to support people she trusts and cares deeply for. Or when she's in serious trouble.
(At least her clothes re-materialize when she's done performing.)
Flipsphere
In short, it is the AT3 heroines' ultimate attack because of their relationship with the Wills of the Planets. Suzunomia, being one of the Wills, can superimpose her soul onto reality in order to summon anything that comes to mind, manifesting it as real matter and using it to attack an enemy. However, this attack is only available in extreme situations or if the heroine (Suzunomia, in this case) trusts whoever is protecting them while they are performing Song Magic. Here's how Suzunomia's soul and summoned attacks will appear in reality. Although, instead of words, the magic will take the form of a giant orb of light. Performing Flipsphere requires Purging 4 times....Yay magical stripping.
Mind Guardian
To keep people from messing with their soulspaces (which equates to their unconscious mind), Reyvateils have have mind guardians to keep out any people they do not trust out. Mind Guardians are formed from the feelings and thoughts the Reyvateils hold dear. Suzunomia's Mind Guardian is Aretia, who represents Suzunomia's thoughts towards creation and its relation to life and death. While telepaths will be able to read Suzunomia's conscious thoughts, Aretia will block them from accessing her unconscious mind and memories.
(Aretia's personality will be described in the comments section.)
Will Abilities
Suzunomia is a Will of the Planet, essentially a higher being equivalent to a god, and possesses an immortal soul. However, the vessel she inhabits is not. It is essential for Suzunomia to inhabit a body so that she can manifest in the mortal realm since her soul exists on a higher plane without one. Suzunomia can change the body's physical attributes so that it takes on her normal form when she is in control of the body. An example of this would be when Suzunomia takes control of Finnel's body and changes Finnel's entire appearance to fit Suzunomia's identity.
In mythology, she is the God of song and creation, which is not far from the truth considering her role is to produce energy that is the basis of all 3D substance. As the planet's Singing Will, it is Suzunomia's duty to create symphonic power (aka Dynamic D-Waves) to sustain the life of both the planet and the other Wills. Symphonic power, in this case, is life energy. It is also the source of power for manifesting Song Magic and can be used to power any sort of appliance as long as it's converted into electrical energy or if the appliance can use symphonic energy directly. When singing, it will disperse into the land of Suzunomia's immediate area up to the size of NY (based on game powercap), making any uninhabitable place fertile and increase the growth rate of plant life. Otherwise, the symphonic power will be stored inside herself, or she can direct the energy flow to another so that they can produce Song Magic. Because Reyvateils do not need to sing to perform Song Magic, the same applies to Suzunomia's creation of symphonic energy: she will produce symphonic energy without vocalizing. However, her singing will produce more energy by comparison.
It is also possible for Suzunomia to identify and assess the souls around her. For example, she is the only Will to be able to identify the frequency of Ar Ru's location within Finnel's soulspace. Also, in Finnel's route, she is able to locate Aoto's soulspace and connect it with Finnel's (with her permission) in order to prevent the destruction of Aoto's soul via Border Disease. While she is able to perform such manipulations, Suzunomia is not able to look into or enter the Soulspaces that do not belong to the body she inhabits. Therefore, she cannot read anyone's mind or destroy their soul from the inside. Suzunomia's assessments mainly focus on the amount of life energy left and its type based on its frequency (so she would able to tell the difference between the souls of plants, animals, humans vs Reyvateils, etc).
(Mentioned in canon setting:) Suzunomia is able to sing and comprehend Ar Ciela, which the language of the planet. It cannot be fully understand by humans because it goes above audible hearing range. Her singing range would normally allow her to contact the souls of planets, not just Ar Ciel, but it will be nerfed so she cannot communicate with other planets. Even if she could communicate with another planet, she would only be able send her feelings rather than direct communication.
CHARACTER SAMPLES.
✖ First Person POV: Thread #1, Threads 2 & 3, Thread 4, Thread 5, Thread 6
✖ Third Person POV:
Ec tisia
"Let's forgive everything."
It's a very faint wish. It's almost completely drowned out by Ar Ciel's pain, sorrow, anguish...But she can hear it nonetheless, now that she has remembered to sing. It is that one hope that allows her to be: the Will to Sing.
And yet, Suzunomia cannot be happy for her return to grace. Her actions to fight her banishment has burdened her peer. It is all too obvious from Finnel's Soulspace: her internal world, her spirit, is withered and devastated. Covered in darkness that Suzunomia has come to hate. The landscape is a constant reminder of the torment she unwittingly inflicted through Ayatane's plans and knowingly by her own hands. Without knowing herself, she had been both a fool and an aggressor. It's too similar to bitter memories of the humans' destruction of Her heart.
Even when she sings and the area around her flourishes, the guilt and shame still remain. There is only so much she can do, and this is not enough to relieve her conscious. A bigger problem weighs down her mind as well: she can she truly be forgiven? In that same line of thought, can the Divine Will truly forgive the humans for all the pain she's been inflicted with?
Can that little wish become loud enough transcend the all-consuming rage of a dying planet?
She'll have to trust and support the feelings that Aoto and the others carry. If they able to convey those feelings properly, if Tyria can truly pull through the operation of planting the Heart of Gaea, then she could return to the Consensus, to Mother. And then she could begin to create again and foster a world that will treat Finnel kindly...
"Ar Ciel...will perish."
It almost feels like the wind is knocked out of her before she turns to spot...a man. A very tall, unfamiliar man with a soul that's equally foreign. A child of another Planet...?
"Leave! You do not have authorization to be here," Suzunomia barks, trying to not to seem overly startled. A stranger should not be able to Dive this deeply into Finnel's Soulspace. Unless...
Aretia is there with him, squirming and clawing at the hand that's forced a metal collar around her neck. "You fucking bastard-! Get your filthy hands off me! I swear, I'll rip you to shreds before booting you out of here-- GYAHHH!!" A loud zap is the source her Mind Guardian's pained scream. She makes another attempt to pry herself away, but the collar activates once more, leaving her limp in the man's grasp.
"W-who...are you?" Taking a step back, Suzunomia mentally prepares for an attack. The stranger hasn't really reacted to Aretia's struggles. He simply continues to stare at the Will with a blank expression. It's unnerving, especially after such a display. The only thing she can do is protect herself--
"Even if this planet's death is prevented, it has been targeted destruction. It is unavoidable."
Her eyes narrow, and what little composure she has is lost when she hisses back, "How dare you. Who are you to claim such a thing? You do not know the wrath of Ar Ciel!" The world around them reacts to her words, her feelings. The ground shakes beneath them as the flowers she just created withers. Cracks form, rumbling with active lava.
The man is not having any of that though. He remains unphased, his expression neutral as ever as he raises a hand to interrupt: "Unless a contract is made with the CDC, it will not survive at this rate. You must decide now before my time limit is up...Do you wish to protect this planet?"
Despite her wariness, Suzunomia doesn't even think twice: "Of course!"
The moment she yells those words, everything is lost.
CHARACTER ITEMS.
✖ Pick a Team: Blue
✖ Reason for Joining the CDC: Suzunomia will be accept a contract with moderate disclosure, but it puts her between a rock and a hard place. She will not be happy about destroying worlds, but she will want to stick around so that the CDC doesn't target Ar Ciel. Because the last thing Mother needs is an outside force kicking her while she's down.
✖ Mission Freebie: A new body will be considered her first freebie.
✖ Personal Item or Weapon: None.
✖ Character Inventory:-Her clothes.
Aretia [Min Guardian]
Personality: Normally, Aretia is very polite and well-spoken. She is completely loyal to Suzunomia and tries to follow orders perfectly. Her one weakness is her short temper. When things don't go how she'd like, she becomes very aggressive and foul-mouthed. This also includes when people are snooping around and when she's called out on being a bad liar.
Powers: Suzu can manifest her Mind Guardian, Aretia, in real life as part of her Song Magic. Aretia attacks enemies by shouting into a megaphone, which materializes the words into giant boulders.
Aretia, as a Mind Guardian, protects Suzu's mind/soulspace. So, if someone were trying to read her mind, they would have to interact with Aretia. Conscious thoughts are fair game, but further access to Suzu's unconscious mind or memories will be blocked by Aretia.
